in newtown, connecticut. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett. this just in. listen. >> 6-7 muc. sandy hook school. caller thinks someone is shooting in the building. front glass is broken, unsure why. all units, the individual that i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gunfire. units responding sandy hook school at this time, the shooting appears to have stopped. the school is in lockdown. >> that broken glass is the result of the gunman reportedly shooting his way into the school. the unthinkable tragedy has left this very small new england town shattered tonight. 28 people dead. that's including the shooter himself. most of those killed were students at the school. very, very young students. there were 20 children killed. between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. there were also 6 adults shot dead after a heavily armed gunman dressed in black fatigues and a military vest opened fire in the school. >> we just told a little boy about his sister now and just to see him, he said who am i going to play with? i have nobody to play with now. excuse me. >> the gunma

tonight. i can tell you his mother nancy lanza was found dead at the family home here in newtown, as well. she had been a teacher at the sandy hook elementary school. the school's principal dawn hochsprung was among those killed and tonight a friend remembered her as "quote, the kind of person you would want to be educating your kids. school psychologist mary sherlock was also kilged. this afternoon afternoon the brother, ryan lanza was taken in for questioning by police and he was handcuffed. officials did not label him a suspect. the gunman's father was also questioned in relation to what happened here today. tonight, a nation in mourning. candle light vigils were held in newtown and across the country. there was one just outside of the white house in washington, d.c. earlier today, president obama ordered flags to be flown at half staff nationwide in tribute to the victims of this terrible tragedy. in an emotional address, he said this to the nation. >> i know there's not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those who died today we

and trauma is going to last for years and for some of these families, forever. the community of newtown is, it's doing its best, as we heard a few moments ago, it's doing its best to heal. but what can be done to help the young children and families involved in yesterday's horrific shootings? joining me now from washington, d.c., psychiatrist dr. josh weiner. dr. weiner, i want to start with something that we've been talking about off and on throughout the past couple of hours here. gun control, obviously that is going to be a discussion that is had in washington, d.c., hopefully over the next few weeks and months. but mental health in this country is not a topic that is discussed in public, at least, a great deal. how much of the conversation should be centered on that? >> to me, i think the conversation should actually start with focusing on the mental health aspect. if you want to fight crime and you want to fight the use of guns and violence, you need to start by mental health treatment. you need to improve the access to care that a lot of people have. you need to take a look at what's

. >>> we begin the broadcast with a shooting in newtown, connecticut. 90 minutes of new york city. >> all the new details. >> mandy, the shooting happened this morning just after 9:30. that's when police got a 911 call. connecticut state police officials say that on and off duty officers reported to the school. they immediately began a search and an evacuation of the school. the shooter was found on scene deceased inside the building. as you mentioned, 18 children and 8 adults among those killed. the shooter as well also dead. officials tell nbc news a second person is in custody, wanted for questioning with relation to this shooting. officials have not confirmed those numbers saying that they are still notifying next of kin. the white house was notified this morning of the shooting and said like so many parents everywhere today, their hearts go out and they feel enormous, enormous sympathy to what the parents here and this community are going through. >> absolutely. it's completely tragic. thank you very much for the update. we will continue to monitor the situation as the developments u

think it's been a travesty in the wake of newtown, and yes, we should have a conversation about gun control and there should be parody with taking care of the mental health of americans. that discussion has been drowned out or lost or lost or never, ever happened. mr. lanza was obviously a very sick individual and needed help. i'm not sure the mental health discussion has gotten enough attention. what do you think? >> no, it hasn't. in fact, what's been happening is, of course, there's been more stereo typing stereotyping ever people with mental illness calling these people crazy. yes, he probably did have autism and/or asperger's, but people with those disorders don't generally become violent and what's interesting is that on some of the stories on the internet there are people who have made -- posted comments blaming what he did because there have been some unconfirmed reports that maybe he was take something medication. people have made comments blaming the shooting rampage on the medication. this isn't true. the problem is that people -- anybody who needs medication needs to be
